Persist Ponte.

There is no city in South Africa that has had changing faces like Hillbrow. The changing faces represent a city of geo-political significance. Once an exclusively white metropolitan neighborhood then, an emerging black middle class hotspot and now a dilapidated haven for a daylight underworld.

- Rita T.M. Kufandarerwa (2017)

Are you up for the challenge?

Johannesburg is a city with many different social, political and economical difficulties for residents to overcome.

According to the Johannesburg development agency official website, 50% of the population is under the age of 24.

Johannesburg has changed so much over the past few decades that it cannot simply be mapped by looking at street names and landmarks, but should be navigated by sights, sounds, smells or even feelings.

This project was inspired by a walking tour of Hillbrow that we took as part of our Honours course at Open Window (2020). We took this tour through Dlala Nje.

The data for this project was collected through Gauteng City Region Observatory's "Quality of Life" Survey, Numbeo, and by searching online marketplaces such as Gumtree, Junkmail and Facebook.
